What Cities Have Opted in for Adult-Use Cannabis

Many cities have chosen their stance on whether or not they will have cannabis business licenses in their territory.

Illinois Bill 1438 will allow recreational use of cannabis in the state of Illinois, but has an opt-out provision for cities that wish to not participate in allowing cannabis business licenses. Heres’s what we know so far:

Chicago

Chicago has opted-in for recreational cannabis sales, but has decided to exclude the downtown business district near the Magnificent Mile. The remainder of the city has been broken down into 7 areas in which only 13 dispensaries will be allowed in each.

Schaumburg

Schaumburg will allow recreational sales with a 3% tax. Only 5 dispensaries will be allowed in Schaumburg.

Downer’s Grove

Downer’s Grove has opted-out of recreational cannabis sales.

Mokena

Mokena has opted-out of recreational cannabis sales.

Orland Park

Orland park as opted-out of recreational cannabis sales.

Joliet

Joliet will allow recreational cannabis sales.

Buffalo Grove

Buffalo Grove will allow recreational cannabis sales, however, there are additional zoning regulations to be followed for cannabis businesses operating in Buffalo Grove.

Lake Zurich

Lake Zurich has opted out of recreational cannabis sales.

Northbrook

Northbrook will allow recreational cannabis sales. Dispensaries will also be allowed to be closer to daycares and schools but none will be allowed in the downtown area.

Naperville

Naperville has opted-out of recreational cannabis sales.

St. Charles

St. Charles will allow recreational sales of cannabis up to two dispensaries.

Bolingbrook

Bolingbrook has opted-out of recreational cannabis sales.

Galesburg

Galesburg will allow recreational cannabis sales.

Aurora

Aurora will allow recreational cannabis sales, but dispensaries cannot be within 750 feet of a school or daycare.

Lombard

Lombard will allow recreational sales of cannabis, but a business that chooses their location in a conditional use area will need approval from both the village board and the plan commission.

Oak Park

Oak Park will allow recreational sales of cannabis.
